Talking Together Sharing lunch: Navigating Warehousing and Logistics in the Home and Gift Industry
We were delighted to co-sponsor the latest Talking Together Sharing Lunch alongside Talking Tables last week. Held at their beautiful HQ, this event brought together giftware brands to explore the complexities of warehousing and logistics. It was a fantastic opportunity to connect, share experiences, and gain valuable insights from industry peers.
Guests enjoyed a delicious lunch and plenty of networking before settling in for an engaging panel discussion featuring Thomas O'Brien from Boxer Gifts, Mark McCormack from Talking Tables, and David Atkinson from Danilo. The panellists provided their perspectives on key topics, from the pros and cons of in-house warehousing versus third-party logistics (3PL) to the role of technology and the challenges of managing operations in a post-Brexit landscape.
Choosing Your Warehousing Model
A major talking point was the balance between in-house warehousing and third-party logistics (3PL). Thomas highlighted the advantages of maintaining direct control over operations with in-house warehousing, by running warehouses in both the UK and the US, offering greater flexibility and quality control. Mark, however, explained how Talking Tables has benefited from outsourcing to 3PLs, reducing costs and streamlining container movements by selecting locations close to key ports. David took a different perspective, sharing how Danilo has successfully adopted a hybrid approach, blending in-house management with external support to navigate post-Brexit complexities. It was great to hear these diverse experiences, and it is exactly why events like this are so valuable - they offer a chance to learn from one another and explore solutions together.
Location, Location, Location
Where you base your warehouse matters more than you might think! Thomas spoke about choosing Leeds for his UK operations, allowing him to stay closely involved with day-to-day management. Mark explained why Stoke was the ideal choice for Talking Tables, providing smoother inland container movement. Simon discussed how Danilo tackled post-Brexit challenges by opening a UK 3PL warehouse, ensuring smoother cross-border operations.
Tech to the Rescue
Thomas highlighted how automation has significantly enhanced operational efficiency at Boxer Gifts, allowing seamless integration with carriers and simplifying order management. Mark also spoke about the importance of using the right systems to streamline warehouse operations, reduce errors, and provide real-time visibility. The panellists agreed that investing in technology is a game-changer for ensuring smooth logistics and maintaining excellent customer service.
People Power
Managing warehouse staff efficiently is key. Panellists emphasised the value of keeping processes simple to reduce training time and boost productivity. Mark added that maintaining clear communication with 3PL providers is vital, especially during seasonal peaks.
Balancing Costs with Customer Experience
Striking the right balance between controlling costs and meeting customer expectations was another hot topic. From offering free freight above a certain order value to using shipping calculators, the panelists shared practical strategies for keeping expenses in check without compromising service.
