Government Seeks Input on Small Business Access to Finance

Department for Business and Trade

The UK government has initiated a call for evidence to better understand the challenges small businesses face when accessing debt finance. This initiative aims to gather insights from small business owners, lenders, and industry experts to shape future policies that support the growth and sustainability of small enterprises.

The call for evidence encompasses several key areas:

  • Lending Market Dynamics: Evaluating the current state of the lending market and its alignment with small business needs.
  • Demand for Finance: Understanding the specific financial requirements and challenges faced by small businesses.
  • Application and Approval Processes: Assessing the efficiency and transparency of loan application procedures.
  • Alternative Financing Models: Exploring non-traditional financing options available to small enterprises.
  • Under-served Segments: Identifying groups within the small business community that may lack adequate access to financing.

For members of The Giftware Association, participating in this call for evidence is particularly crucial. The giftware industry, characterised by a diverse range of businesses from independents to larger suppliers, often encounters unique financial challenges. By contributing their experiences, GA members can help highlight sector-specific issues, ensuring that future policies are tailored to support the diverse needs of the giftware community.

How to Participate

Small business owners and stakeholders are encouraged to share their insights by emailing accesstofinance@businessandtrade.gov.uk. The deadline for submissions is 11:59pm on 8 May 2025. Detailed information about the call for evidence and the submission process can be found on the official government website.

Engaging in this initiative offers an opportunity for the giftware sector to influence policies that directly impact access to finance. The GA urges its members to participate, ensuring that the collective voice of the industry is heard and considered in shaping a more supportive financial environment for small businesses.
